Simplify Expressions
Addition and Subtraction
Only like terms can be added or subtracted by following algebraic rules.
2x2 + 3x2 + 5x – 2x + 9 – 3
5x2 + 3x + 6
Multiplication
Multiply each term in the first bracket by the second bracket following algebraic rules.
(2x + 1) (3x + 4)
6x2 + 8x + 3x + 4
Important Products:
(x – y) (x + y) = x2 – y2
(x + y)2 = x2 + 2xy + y2
(x - y)2 = x2 - 2xy + y2
(x + y)3= x3 + 3x2y + 3xy2 + y3
(x - y)3 = x3 - 3x2y + 3xy2 - y3
Division
The method of division of an expression depends on the structure of the expression.
The denominator can be divided into each term of the numerator.

The denominator is a factor of the numerator.

The denominator is a factor of the numerator but the numerator is of a degree greater than two. The division is carried out by long division.
